Last Union Veteran Buried in Each New York County
Last Union Veteran Project – New York
Beginning in 2003, the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War (SUVCW) embarked on the Last Union Soldier Project. The purpose of the project was to locate and appropriately mark the final resting place of the last Union Civil War Soldier buried in each county of each state of this great country.
As Department of New York Commander, Brian Castler started researching the sixty-two (62) counties in New York State to obtain the name of the last Civil War Veteran buried in each county.
Research included the internet, sending letters to County Clerks, County Historians, local Historical Societies, reviewing Newspaper Archives, and looking at different websites such as Fold 3, National Park Service, Genealogy Bank, My Heritage, Ancestry, NYS Military Museum, including State, County, and Local websites .
The information that has been compiled is the best that could be found. It is possible that this information may not be 100% correct, but it is the best information available as September 19, 2023.
