Josiah C. Read

Maintaining his health to the last, Comrade Read
died suddenly May 22, 1939 from a heart attack
at the home of his son-in-law, Dr. Nathan B. Van
Etten, 120 W. 183rd St., Bronx, N.Y.

His war record began in 1861 at the age of 15
years and terminated at the close of the Civil
War, during which time he experienced many
hazardous encounters with the enemy.

In addition to being a Past Department
Commander, he was at the time of his
death, Adjutant General of the GAR and sole
survivor of James Monroe Post, GAR. He will
be remembered as a familiar figure in the most
notable partiotic programs of Manhattan.
